Since our first shop in San Rafael in 1974, Rhodwork has built a reputation for consistently providing quality automobile collision repair, auto paint work, and auto restoration services.

We are in this business because we love cars.  For me, this love affair started when I was a boy of about ten years of age.  This was at a time when cars were redesigned by the manufacturers on an every other year basis.  I discovered that motor vehicles were supposed to be elegant, powerful and have a specific utility, depending on their intended use.  This intrigued me. I was always looking for ways to either refine design elements, or to simply make things functionally better.

This fascination with automobile aesthetics lead me on what seemed to me to be a natural path; to the modification of auto and truck bodywork.  In school, I studied metallurgy, metal sculpture, design, and business.  After college, I began an apprenticeship at Jack L. Hunt Automotive in San Rafael in the auto body department, joined the machinists union and began apprenticeship training in auto collision repair.

Upon becoming a journeyman in this field, I decided that it was time go into business.  Instead of finding an existing business for sale, I decided that I wanted to start a new, more personalized model for this particular business.  I realized at this time in Marin County, that thoughtful, personalized, quality service was a trend that was becoming more commonplace in small business. And so, Rhodwork was born and built from scratch.

Our first shop, C&R Auto Reconstructions opened in November of 1974 in the Brett Harte business district of San Rafael.  In 1982, I bought out my partner and moved to a larger facility on Woodland Avenue.  In 1987, I moved into one building at our present site on Bay Street and changed the business name to Rhodwork.  We have since expanded into three buildings and an outside storage facility.

We still service some of our original clients that have been coming back since 1974.  One or two of them still have their original cars. The work that we did on those cars in the seventies is still guaranteed to this day.  Rhodwork is a lifelong endeavor for me.

I’ve lived in Marin my whole life.  I’ve been in San Rafael my entire career and this is where we’ll stay.
